Development and evolution of the academic information system
Abstract
This paper presents the design concept, architecture and functionality of the information system built at Lodz University of Technology along with the design and implementation methodologies. The system was successfully implemented in 1998 and is still under development. The system facilitates all the important activities of the community of 20000 students and 3000 staff members. A high level of data security has been achieved thanks to the use of smart cards as trusted storage of personal tokens and cryptographic keys used for user authentication and authorisation, data encryption and electronic signature.
