Filip Edmund Gęstwicki Skale ekwiwalentności w badaniach dochodów gospodarstw domowych *** Equivalence scales in household income studies Abstract Data on household income are an important source of information about the standard of living, income inequality, poverty, and social exclusion. Demographic structure is also an important element that should be taken into account. This is why, in this study equivalence scales – i.e. parameters which allow to compare the conditions of households of different sizes and different demographic structures – were used. This paper discusses the impact the choice of equivalence scale had on income level and differentiation. Surveys on income distribution with various equivalence scales carried out in various countries are quoted. An increased elasticity of scale results in an increase of income concentration measures and in a decrease of median to mean ratio, which means that an increase of elasticity of scale causes an increase of income differentiation measures.
