Medical electronic data interchange (EDI) systems in hospitals

Abstract
Every doctor uses in every day practice a computer, which has become the basic tool and does not seem to be something unusual and difficult to master. In addition, medical information and communication technology for many years has been a subject of teaching future doctors in medical universities in Poland and around the world. Today such IT systems used in the health services have become groundbreaking, which allow for efficient implementation of social and health policies of the state and are aimed at improving the effectiveness of treatment and the quality of patient care. Powerful boom and dissemination in the last decade of ultra-modern communication systems has led to an improvement of information systems implemented and installed in the hospital and have provided enormous benefits for IT services in the health sector. The systems have enabled the integration between devices and applications functioning in health care unit and have been used in the development of new forms of medical services. Today, medicine is unquestionably the most rapidly growing discipline that uses in everyday practice technique and the most modern technology and data processing systems, both imaging and textual.
At the beginning of the paper the concept of IT System and Hospital Information System are explained. In this section currently functioning standards of data transmission both text and images, in health care units, have been characterized.
Then the paper describes the operation of individual modules installed in the hospital, from the HIS (Hospital Information System), RIS (Radiology Information System), PACS (Picture and Communication Systems) through LIS (Laboratory Information System), ending with the pharmaceutical PIS (Pharmacy Information System) and by WEB distribution of images to departments and wards.
The end of text allows you to find answers to the question of why the implementation of the information system and the use of modern computer technology in the hospital are so important in the whole process of treatment. It explains that thanks to this implementation, health unit employees have access to all medical facts of the patient thanks to quick search e.g. using barcode readers. The paper clarifies that the computer has become an indispensable tool for the collection and processing of information, together with the appropriate software installed on it.
